But in 2018, a video of Southlake high school students chanting the N-word went viral, and the unveiling of a Cultural Competence Action Plan in response set off a backlash that consumed the town, fueled by a growing national crusade against critical race theory. “Southlake” tells the story of how this idyllic city, and its local school board election, became the poster child for a new political strategy with national repercussions.

For three women at the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office, keeping professional and personal lives separate is essential. But in May of 2018, just 13 miles away, a gunman killed eight students and two teachers at Santa Fe High School. This time, leaving their work at the office would prove impossible.

New York Magazine partnered with nonprofit Narrative 4 for an radical experiment in shared empathy. The idea was simple: Pair up people on opposite sides of the gun debate to share their stories and see whether they can come to common ground. But there was nothing simple about the emotional exchanges that ensued.

Kids in Confinement is a multi-part vertical documentary series produced in partnership with PBS Independent Lens and The Dallas Morning News. The series examines the juvenile justice system in Dallas County through the perspectives of those interrogating it, those who seek reform, and those within the system. Kids in Confinement is produced for social distribution, told in five episodes running 90 seconds each.
